Yamaha PSR Tabla Styles

Yamaha PSR Keyboards

Yamaha PSR 2000 and PSR 1000 models represented a brand new mid-range keyboard arrangers very different from the previous PSR740 and PSR 640 series.

The introduction of the PSR2000 was an entirely different operational system. That system has been carried forward in the Tyros, the 2100, the 3000, the Tyros2, the PSR-S900, the Tyros3, the PSR-S910, the Tyros4, the PSR-S950, the Tyros5, the PSR-S970, PSR-S975. Some of these keyboards come with a microphone so you can sing along as you play. Not only you can capture and save your keyboard settings, but you can also record and save your playing on the keyboard. Record your songs and share them.

WHAT IS A STYLE FILE?

Every Yamaha arranger keyboard has built-in styles (drum beats) that are included with that keyboard. Sometimes called internal styles, these styles or drum beats are stored in the PRESET area and they are always available and can not be changed or erased. There are also options to use external style files through USB.

STYLE FILE FORMATS (SFF1 & SFF2)

The term “SFF” stands for Style File Format. The newest Yamaha style file format, referred to as SFF2, is used in the Tyros3/4/5 and the PSR-S910/950/970/975/SX900. The earlier format was used in the Tyros1/2 and the PSR-2000/2100/3000 and PSR-S900. If you have one of these earlier keyboards, you will not be able to read SFF2 files directly. If you have a newer keyboard, you can read both the SFF2 and SFF1 style file formats. So, owners of newer keyboards can read all the styles in this collection. Owners of older keyboards will not be able to read the files in the “SFF2 styles” folder.

The SFF2 format can contain more data. New keyboards have for instance mega voices, so the format had to på changed. The ONLY difference between the two formats is the structure of the CASM data. The CASM data in the style tells the keyboard how to interpret the MIDI data in the style. The SFF2 format has 3 seperate data settings for low, midrange nad high notes while the SFF1 format has a general data setting for all notes.

HOW STYLES WORK

Styles are controlled by the chords you play with your left hand. When you play a chord on your Yamaha keyboard, an entire backing orchestra will join your performance based on the structure of the chord being played. New models after PSR 2000 onwards included one-touch-settings (OTS) built in and stored with the style. The OTS use the preset voices on the keyboard. Not many users actually create their own styles from scratch, but many have learned how to modify an existing preset style to “tune” it to their own particular requirements.

CREATING STYLES

Yamaha PSR Keyboards provide you with the capability of creating your very own “User” personalized styles. You can create a style entirely from scratch, although few owners attempt that. You can also, however, create a new style by modifying styles that already exist. This includes taking different parts from existing styles and putting them together into your own style creation. Yamaha Style Files can be created on an external sequencer or computer. Yamaha has provided a Style Template file (template.mid) that can be used to create custom styles. Just open the midi template file in Cubase or in any other sequencing program, resave the project with another name such as ‘Indian.mid’ then fill in the sections and tracks by midi keyboard. When finished, rename the file with the extension ‘.sty’.

YAMAHA TABLA STYLES

New Yamaha PSR Keyboards have built-in Indian Kit installed and we can make Tabla styles using this Indian kit. These tabla styles give you a feel of real Bollywood music with tabla voice and Indian instruments. Keyboard models with Indian kit are PSR S910, S710, S550, S650, S750, S950, S970, A2000. Yamaha SX700 and SX900 are new touch screen keyboards equipped with Indian kit.

YAMAHA KARAOKE STYLES

Yamaha karaoke styles are the Beats/ Rhythms for Yamaha keyboards with Intros and Interlude .s added into Intro I, II, III buttons, so you don’t need to learn how to play these music .s for your performance while singing, just press one of the Intro buttons and a perfect music Intro or Interlude .s will be played automatically and then it will come back to Main A, B, C or D. All you need to understand is what KHARJ note you are going to sing the song with, so press the right note or Chord (Major/ Minor) before using Intro buttons. The real beauty of the Karaoke Styles is that the style will adjust to your preferred scale. When you start the song just play the chord on the (left) accompaniment side and the intro will automatically adjust to play in the scale of your chord.

These styles include all possible Intros Variations Break Ending available in a song. There is a limitation of bars/measures in Yamaha keyboard style formation. Musician have limitation. Longer bar or measure cannot be created.  For example in a song where singer is singing la la la la la will be played by musician. What is in demo will be available in the karaoke style. First style is created then we record mp3 demo with that style.

These styles use the tones and drum kits which are available in the Yamaha keyboard Models SX900, SX700, PSR S970, S770, S975, S775, A3000 etc.. These styles may not play the right sounds in other Yamaha keyboard models.

Note:– A prelude is something to begin a song, and introduction to the music. An interlude is an intermission between song, which usually happens in the middle of a song. The INTRO [I] INTRO [II] and [III] consist of prelude and Interludes as well as the Rhythm part. When you play INTRO, you need to play chords in the chord section with the [ACMP] turned on. Most of the Bollywood songs consist of 1- 2 interludes and 1-2 variations. Very few songs have three interludes or all four variations..

Yamaha PSR Keyboards built in styles are not songs therefore these styles have all three intros and all four variations. With one Yamaha built in style you can play many different songs. These karaoke styles may not play back precisely as composers originally created.
